In November 2010, Aukje Dekker, Sieto Noordhoorn and Arthur van Beek started a museum together: the Eddie the Eagle Museum This happened because we, after graduating art school, simultaneously felt a strong urge to combine & collaborate and especially not to wait until someone else comes to give value to what you do. So we started to do things ourselves: you want to be in a museum? create a museum. The art world seems less and less an area for experiment and more and more a field for achievement and prestige. As the Eddie the Eagle Museum we try to counterbalance this by focussing on things and people on the fringes of society. There is a whole market outside the regular market and we provide a space for that market. We make no distinction between the art of cooking, storytelling or painting. We are not focussed on the young and upcoming. We create, and everyone with ambition is welcome to show their skills, regardless of age, reputation or medium. With this spirit we organize exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad, we make art independently and together, with each other and with others. There are no rules or indicators, just zealousness and instinct. The Eddie the Eagle Museum is a subversive museum sparring with different artists in various disciplines. We encourage and present all that is fearless. And by placing content in different contexts we try to build bridges between various layers of society. This has led to unexpected alliances, unimagined forms of artistic expression and exhibitions in Europe and abroad. New plans, new collectives, new bands and new loves sprouted at the Eddie the Eagle Museum, a catalyst for progression within the arts We've curated and participated in exhibitions in FOAM, The Dutch Film Museum, EYE, SMART, Amsterdam Museum, Shopping Centers, in Brussels, Mexico City, Berlin, Russia, the OPENCOOP, de Tolhuistuin, Mews Project Space, ITGWO, many other festivals. We participated in Art in Amsterdam, the Tennesee Bienale, started a cult (Eaglism), have a radioshow on Red Light Radio, organise Trashville, a race made from trash and are founding partners of the first creative knowledge cooperation in the Netherlands: the OPEN COOP Currently our studio space is set in Tetterode Amsterdam West, but the eagle can land anywhere. EAGLISM ST PETERSBURG: Taboo Vivant
Eddie the Eagle Museum 2013 exhibited in the Balie Amsterdam This exhibition is the result of a month residency in St Petersburg: during the tightening of Putin laws in order to the gay community. In the performance we made in Russia visitors were asked to participate in a journey, they were clothed, blessed and numbered: their sins recorded and transformed. Eventually they were led into the absolute darkness, positioned as a numbered sheep. Clueless of their surrounding full of innuendo and taboo, it was the camera's flash that shed the only millisecond of light, but then it was already too late. When in St Petersburg we talked a lot about the conflict between the common sense and the actual status quo, Putins laws, absurdities and aversive rebellion. We figured that when you don't do anything out of the ordinary in Russia you are 'good'. But are you responsible for your actions if you don't know where you're part off? If one isn't fully aware, does that make them less present? Nevertheless we were firmly recommended to only send the pictures to the participants after we left Russia. In the bended shadow of the common, perhaps only the darkness makes you free. | exhibition in de Balie Amsterdam 2013 | Poster Eddie, Diane Arbus and Foam | Ugly collage of Museumn8 in FOAM during the Diane Arbus exhibition. EDDIE THE EAGLE SHOPPING CENTER
From June 1st till June 30th, 2011 the Eddie The Eagle Museum takes possession of nine empty shops throughout the Magna Plaza Shopping Mall Amsterdam. During this month the Magna Plaza will gradually transform into the Eddie The Eagle Shopping Center. The Eddie The Eagle Museum will open its doors throughout the Magna Plaza Shopping Centre and introduce the so-called -Post Modern Shopping- experience. Shake out your spendthrift and replenish your minds! The Eddie The Eagle Shopping Centre will offer discounting discoveries, discharging sensations, bulimic perceptions, overextended spending power and poignant proficiency sell-outs. Expect the Magna Plaza as you have never expected it: previews, premieres, scoops, exhibitions, performances, workshops, lectures, food, food for thought, music and theater. -Products- can be purchased and fair physical and mental prices will be asked. 1/3rd of the shops in the building will be ours, so no little joke, but an economic model in which experience will be exchanged, shared and paid; -not a bag full but a head full-. Post Shopping At the interface of commerce and high art, the Eddie the Eagle Museum introduces the -Post Shopping- in the Magna Plaza. During the month of June, a group of artists transform the vacant retail spaces into artistic enclaves within a larger purchase based territorial dominion. The Eddie the Eagle Museum seeks solutions for art to maintain experimental within an economic model as a shopping mall. Can artists keep their practice -pure' and authentic- ? And is the opportunity to occupy this spaces an enrichment, or does smell like conformism and a disguised form of commerce?
